[ John's been trying to locate the microphone on the journal for the last five minutes and, for the last two or so, there's a fluctuation of the feed as the book shuts and reopens. Sod it. Sally seemed to have heard him well enough when he was speaking into the open pages before, and it's already proved to be sensitive to written transmissions.

Rainfall is a distant sound. ]

Right, ehm. Good morning, Luceti.

My name is John Watson and I've a few questions, specifically toward the medical situation we've got here. I'm at your clinic, looking over the equipment and the pharmacy. There seems to be a rather, well, shocking imbalance between the advancement of your technology in medical tools and the drugs you've got.

I'm aware there's a hospital somewhere, but is there anyone about that wouldn't mind speaking about the health care they've been receiving here? If anyone could also direct me to the current Chief of Medicine -well, any authority figure between the clinic and the hospital, really- I'd be grateful.

[ Is anyone even in charge around here? It seems as dangerous to make an assumption that there is a hierarchy in place than to think there's not one. ]

[ Fair enough. It puts him at some ease to know there seems to be a filter in place. He'll wait around, journal settled in his hands. When he spots someone approaching him, though, he shuts the book and shifts it into his left hand. ]

Doctor Willock.

[ John takes his hand and gives a firm, brief squeeze along with a flash of a smile. ]

Thank you for seeing me. Slow day, is it?

[ John has seen period films, especially when they concern spy activity. The man is young, younger than John, but he could be an old soul. It's still too close to his arrival to jump to the conclusion that Willock has seen the Cold War, but he's been told about time differences. John himself is wearing a collared shirt and a jacket that's probably too heavy for spring if not for the rain outside. ]

[Willock nods.] I've been here since eight forty-five and I've only had two walk-ins. Case of bronchitis and someone that cut themselves with a fighting knife. Things can be pretty unpredictable here--one day almost no one will show up, and the next the place will be packed, especially if there's an experiment going on. I worked at a hospital back home, so the pace of things here has taken some getting used to.

Where were you employed before Luceti? [Probably not some place he's heard of, and possibly not one that even exists yet for him, but it'll give some insight into what the man's used to.]

[ There's a nod, followed by a true spark of interest about the brief overview of the clinic's activity. He's got questions, but he sees more of a need to prioritize Willock's inquiries. John is the guest here, and it's never a poor idea to speak of credentials in the medical profession, especially between physicians. ]

I was working in a clinic in London as a GP for two years before coming here. Before that, I served as a medical officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps for fifteen years. I was in Afghanistan for about ten of those fighting the War on Terror. Largely I worked as a field surgeon, but there was some maintenance to be done among our unit as well, naturally. Before my discharge, I was the head of my medical team and Captain of my unit.

[ Speaking of the military, and counting off the general idea of his career, his hands very naturally find themselves behind his back in a parade rest. ]

[This is a Saturday morning, and the only day he's not on any form of duty. So it's going to take his name being mentioned a few times before he actually bothers to dig himself out of bed.

(Chronic insomniac, man. When he crashes, he crashes hard.)

Weary and more than a little tempted to just ignore things and return to unconsciousness, he opens the feed to see what's going on.

... uh. Is there no one there? That is unusual. Perhaps they just stepped out to grab lunch, but with the increased rash of kidnappings lately, the reason might be more sinister.]

Hello? This is Doctor Law. I'll be happy to answer your questions. You are at the plaza clinic, yes?

[Willock raises his eyebrows, suitably impressed. He hasn't heard about this War on Terror before, but the dramatic-sounding name makes him envision a conflict as widespread as the Second World War. He'll have to ask Adele about it later.]

Very nice. I bet the Malnosso will love having someone like you next time they do a draft.

We only have one professional surgeon here--Dr. LeBlanc, who formerly did trauma surgery in Paris. I'm a general practitioner myself, as are Dr. Mizuno and Dr. Scully. The other staff members aren't from Earth, though from what I understand Dr. Law is quite qualified in field medicine.

Yes, I'm a doctor.

[--And a specialist in demon pharmaceuticals. But that's hardly worth mentioning.]

I've had plenty of experience with all sorts of wounds and injuries, so I'm sure looking into the magic side of medicine here will prove very interesting.

Are you planning on trying to become a part of the medical staff here? Once you've settled in.

[ ... Oh. One of these types of newer arrivals, then. Lightning really should have known better, considering the line of questioning he was already using. She's just... well, used to thinking pretty differently than most, when it comes to technology, magic, and the relationships between them. ]

[ Mostly flat, but with a definite tinge of the tone used by someone who's been through this conversation before and finds it not all that entertaining. ]

I take it you don't have manadrives where you're from, either.

[ Basically rhetorical. Nobody here does. ]

I'm kinda of the opinion that maybe some worlds don't have magic anymore.

There's usually more injuries in the village after a draft so there's quite a bit of physical damage but there's illness as well.

That's correct. Do you intend to do the same? We might end up partners if that's the case.

Yes, I have. Quite a few times actually. [As... sad as that may sound. She can't help it if she gets into fights!]

Though the filial magic obtained from Nala here in Luceti isn't as effective as some other naturally obtained curing abilities.

Not a ph-physician, per se... th-though, at present, I am being... trained as a medical a-assistant, and as an astrobiologist I... have some relevant kn-knowledge-bases...

[Robert awkwardly trails off a moment, before continuing:]

... There is... a d-deficit of medical professionals h-here, and the technology is... well... archaic, by m-my world's standards...

About... I'd say a week. I was able to sit up and move around a little in the first few days, at least. It's different for each wing injury I'm sure, but that's around how long my own took to heal.

No, not at all. These are things I've known since before I came here. Your world doesn't have that sort of thing, I assume?

[ Forensic anthropology wasn't a profession you heard of every day, but John knows what she's referring to. The Jeffersonian certainly rings a bell as well. ]

I'm sure you've got another aspect to consider here, then, from the anthropological standpoint. Why did you contact Doctor Willock? Are you interested in trying to pursue your work here as well, or...?

I would like nothing more than to pursue my work. [Back home.] But... while I do not necessarily believe the rumors, I have been told repeatedly that it might be difficult.

What've you heard, exactly?

Did you have a specific doctor or did you have several people helping you out? Would you say your needs were met, so far as food and any other concerns?

Ah. Unfortunately... I'm not entirely sure who treated me. I can't remember their name or face; it's part of my condition, you see. I forget things often, if I don't think about them often enough. But I remember some of my friends visiting, and I remember feeling cozy and relaxed...

That death is a... more temporary state of being. Apparently, our captors possess technology that dwarfs normal resuscitation capabilities.

[Because is magic is not a possibility.]

Also says we're on another planet entirely.

That would mean believing the guide without the evidence to back up these claims.

Never said I believed it, but that's what I've read. I'll tell you what I do believe, though - someone's behind this and they've got the power to spirit people away and strap them with wings that work. Whatever's here, the technology we're seeing doesn't match up with whatever they've got to have.

Now that is a very reasonable conclusion to draw. One of the few I've heard since my arrival.

Well, I mean, I've always sort of considered myself to be at least reasonable...

[ Ahem. ]

It wasn't a difficult conclusion to come to. Reason also makes me inclined to say that knowing it doesn't do much for anyone, from a practical standpoint.
