[ John's been trying to locate the microphone on the journal for the last five minutes and, for the last two or so, there's a fluctuation of the feed as the book shuts and reopens. Sod it. Sally seemed to have heard him well enough when he was speaking into the open pages before, and it's already proved to be sensitive to written transmissions.

My name is John Watson and I've a few questions, specifically toward the medical situation we've got here. I'm at your clinic, looking over the equipment and the pharmacy. There seems to be a rather, well, shocking imbalance between the advancement of your technology in medical tools and the drugs you've got.

I'm aware there's a hospital somewhere, but is there anyone about that wouldn't mind speaking about the health care they've been receiving here? If anyone could also direct me to the current Chief of Medicine -well, any authority figure between the clinic and the hospital, really- I'd be grateful.

[ Is anyone even in charge around here? It seems as dangerous to make an assumption that there is a hierarchy in place than to think there's not one. ]

Oh, yes. It's a really awful feeling; it's a very vicious fever, and it's hard to even move, let alone get out of bed. But as long as one wing stays intact in some way, at least you can recover from it...

As the saying goes, seeing is believing. But studying, learning, and seeing the results even more so.

That explains a few things. I'm in the clinic in the village, I think. At least, I haven't seen anything resembling a colosseum yet.

Not at all, though do you mind waiting until tomorrow? I'm accompanying a friend to the barrier and it'll take the rest of the day to get there.

I see. Makes a bit of sense, really. Even where I'm from, some people enjoy a more... holistic approach to treatment. Though I'll admit we've never had any proof of 'magic'.

What sort of medical problems arise in Luceti, do you know? Is it all physical damage, or have there been incidents of disease as well?

I think I can fit it into my schedule.

Not yet, I only arrived here recently so I've been concentrating on settling in first before going out and contacting the spirits. And yourself?

We'd love to take on another staff member. There are far too many people in this town whose knowledge of medicine starts and ends with healing magic. [He gives a sniff of distaste, showing just how much stock he puts in that approach.] I'm guessing you're a trained physician?

My name is Mia. I work at both of the clinics here, so if you have concerns I am very willing to address them.

Seems like it. I'd be interested in meeting you whenever you've got the time.

I'm trained and have been practicing for nearly twenty years. I'm prepared to provide a formal resume if I can find a computer. Worse come to worse, though, I'm still quite capable of writing.

[ There's a little humor there. John does detect the bit of... is it contempt? John can't say he disagrees at the moment, if only because he hasn't seen any of this 'healing magic' in practice. ]

Mia, what sort of problems in patients do you normally see?

Hm. The most common things are injuries due to drafts or kidnappings. ...I probably could not tell you what specific problem is the most common. The Malnosso are creative.

[That last sentence? Was not a happy sentence.]

What sort of-- [ Clearing his throat ] What sort of injuries have you seen from the kidnappings? All critical?

No, not always. There are those who choose not to come to the clinic if they return with minor injuries - or who will go to a healer they trust, instead.

[Twenty years' experience, and--with that mention of computers--from the 2000s as well? Niiice.]

I don't think a resume will be necessary. Dr. Mizuno hired me after nothing more than a discussion of my credentials. It wasn't as though any of my references could be checked here, anyway.

I've got time--we're having a slow morning today. I'll be over there in a minute.

[With that, he shuts the journal. Within a few moments John will see him coming up the hall, clad in his labcoat and looking as though he stepped out of an old movie with his pomade-swept hair and tie. He offers his hand, smiling.]

Dr. Watson. [And that name sounds awfully familiar...he can't seem to place it, though.]
